About Academic Technology Services

Academic Technology Services (ATS) provides many of the core computing and technology services essential to research and learning at Michigan State University.

Network and Internet Connections

ATS operates MSU’s data network, connecting people via wired and wireless connections across the campus and to the global Internet.

We protect the university’s network using intrusion prevention technology to block millions of attacks per day. We also investigate break-ins when they do occur, and work with campus network administrators to help prevent future intrusions.

Identity, Network File Storage, and E-mail

We provide MSU’s online identity infrastructure, support campus network file storage, and, deliver millions of messages each day to nearly 150,000 MSU e-mail accounts.

Support for Instruction

ATS supports instructional technology in a variety of ways.

In classrooms, we maintain instructional tech podiums, high-resolution computer projectors, displays, and audio services, as well as wireless Internet access.

We support instructional computer labs with some 1700 computers, specialized software, printers and scanners.

ATS provides the online learning environment ANGEL, now used by a majority of students.

ATS’ Scoring Office scans over one million test forms annually.

University Web Presence

Jointly with University Relations, ATS participates in the MSU Web Team. We host hundreds of university Web sites, including MSU’s main Web presence, www.msu.edu.

Technical assistance, training, and sharing information

We help customers solve computer problems at the ATS Help Desk, solving thousands of customer problems annually. Customers can call, e-mail, or walk-in. When needed, our Help Desk provides computer repair service.

In support of the Libraries, Computing & Technology Training Program (LCTTP), ATS provides training from basic computer skills to advanced topics in server and network administration.

ATS also facilitates sharing of knowledge and ideas with numerous university groups and events, like the annual MSU IT Conference, IT Exchange, and MSU Webmasters groups.

Computer Store

ATS offers a convenient on-campus Computer Store located inside the Computer Center, where students, faculty and staff can find and purchase computers and software at academic discounts.

High Performance Computing

Scientists studying everything from climate change to the origins of the universe rely on the High Performance Computer Center (HPCC), operated by ATS.

ATS and LCT

Under the leadership of director Tom Davis, ATS is one of seven units that report to the Vice Provost for Libraries, Computing and Technology, David Gift. ATS offices reside in the Computer Center, in the Communication Arts and Sciences Building, in the Engineering Building, and in the IMC Building.

History

In 2008, ATS was formed as a merger of Academic Computing and Network Services and the Instructional Media Center. Learn more about that merger in the March 25, 2008 article, "ACNS and IMC Merge to Become Academic Technology Services (ATS)."
